Groom Style Guide 2027: Fit First, Fabric Second, Trend Last

Groom content is the most under-planned part of most wedding timelines. A well-fitted mid-range suit reads better in photos than an expensive poorly-fitted one. Start 5–6 months out.

Decode the dress code before you shop

On the invitationWhat to wearCommon mistake
Black tieDinner jacket, grosgrain lapel, black bow tie, patent or polished oxfordWearing a standard black business suit with a long tie
Black tie optionalDark suit or tuxedo; either is correctMixing tuxedo pieces with a suit jacket
Formal / semi-formalDark wool suit, white or pale shirt, silk tieAssuming "formal" means a tuxedo
CocktailSuit, no tie required; pocket square optionalOverdressing to black tie
Destination / beachLightweight linen or tropical wool, unlined jacketHeavy structured wool in humidity

Fit checklist — try all five at once

  1. Shoulder seam ends exactly where the shoulder bone ends. This is the one thing a tailor cannot cheaply fix.
  2. Jacket length covers the seat; with arms relaxed, the hem roughly meets the thumb knuckle.
  3. Sleeve shows ¼–½ inch of shirt cuff.
  4. Trouser break — slight or none for a modern line; no pooling over the shoe.
  5. Collar — no gap between neck and collar band when buttoned.

Get dressed fully for the fitting: correct shoes, shirt, and underlayers. Alterations done over a different shoe height are wrong on the day.

Photo test

Take one photo in daylight and one with a phone flash in the exact outfit. Flash exposes sheen mismatches between jacket and trousers that daylight hides.
